Lancaster Science Factory announces new executive director

Karen Knecht

A science educator from Allentown has been picked to lead the Lancaster Science Factory, the nonprofit announced Monday.

Karen Knecht will take the reins as executive director effective Wednesday, Aug. 7, the Science Factory said.

Knecht previously served at the Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown, serving in various roles over a 23-year career. Most recently, she was vice president of STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) and Strategic Initiatives.

Much of her work focused on connecting education to career and workforce development. She was part of the executive team during the Da Vinci Center’s expansion and relocation from the Cedar Crest College campus to PPL Pavilion in downtown Allentown, a move completed this past May.

In a statement, she called the Lancaster Science Factory “an incredible asset to Lancaster and the region” and said she’s excited to get started.

Knecht succeeds Emily Landis, who stepped down as the Science Factory’s leader last fall. The nonprofit undertook a nationwide search for her replacement, during which Development Director Rob Reed served as interim executive director.

“We are so happy to have Karen join us to lead the Science Factory into its new phase of success,” Board President Rich Young said in a statement. “Her deep knowledge and love of STEM education, as well as her career in science center leadership, will be vital to the continued growth of the organization.”
