The “Refresh Lancaster” mobile hygiene unit kicked off its summer season on Friday with a stop at Union Community Care’s Lancaster Downtown office.

Operated by Lancaster EMS, Refresh Lancaster has been around for about a year and a half. It recently provided its 1,000th shower.

Lancaster EMS’ Alexa Morales was asked about the milestone.

“It feels really good,” she said, “because it took a long time to build rapport within the community. … (T)hey know we are here, and they are willing and ready to use us.”

The 22-foot trailer contains two private shower stalls plus a private office for medical personnel or a social worker to meet privately with clients.

Besides showers, its services include haircuts, medical checkups and distribution of food, clothing and other necessities.

Refresh Lancaster travels to sites throughout Lancaster County.

“I just want to thank the community for their constant and positive support and outreach towards us that allows us to extend our care,” Morales said.
