Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health has announced nine blood drives around Lancaster County over the month of September.
Blood supplies are persistently low and LG Health encourages everyone who can to donate blood and platelets.
Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. to Oct. 15, and LG Health is taking the occasion to encourage Latinos to donate blood. They are the fastest growing demographic group in the U.S., but relatively few donate.
“Donating blood is a powerful and positive way to support others,” the health system said, noting that Hispanic Americans have the highest proportion of people with Type O blood, which unlike other variants can be safely given to people of any blood type.
Blood drive donors are encouraged to register beforehand, either online or by phone at (717) 544-0170. They may also schedule an appointment to donate at LG Health’s Blood Donor Center.
Blood collected in Lancaster County stays here and is used by local health care providers.
