City announces forums to review early ‘Healthy Lives Healthy Lancaster’ findings

The preliminary findings are in from Lancaster’s community health survey, and the city has set up a series of community drop-in forums to discuss them.

“We want to ensure the data truly reflects our community and to gather feedback from residents about their experiences and what they feel would improve community health,” said Craig Walt, Bureau Chief of Health.

Walt’s bureau is in charge of “Healthy Lives Healthy Lancaster,” the first comprehensive health assessment focused solely on the city. In March, the bureau released an online survey asking residents about their physical and mental health and their level of access to fresh food, opportunities to exercise, social services and other factors that influence wellbeing.

The forums will feature information stations summarizing the results so far, along with activities and free refreshments. City staff will be on hand to discuss the findings and answer questions. The dates and times are as follows:

  • Monday, July 29, 4 – 6 p.m.
    Lancaster Recreation Commission
    525 Fairview Ave.
  • Tuesday, July 30, 4 – 6 p.m.
    Tec Centro
    102 Chester St.
  • Monday, Aug. 5, 4 – 6 p.m.
    Lancaster Public Library
    151 N. Queen St.
  •  Wednesday, Aug. 14, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.
    Ebenezer Baptist Church
    701 N. Lime St.

The survey, available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Nepali and Swahili, has been extended and will remain open through the end of August.

Meanwhile, the city is compiling a range of health and demographic statistics. The study will wrap up in the fall with the release of a public report and launch of an online data dashboard.

The goal is to understand and improve the social determinants of health in Lancaster and reduce health disparities.
