• Bird flu vaccine conditionally approved: The U.S Department of Agriculture has given conditional approval for a vaccine aimed at reducing the spread of bird flu among poultry and other animals. Since 2022, over 100 million birds have been affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza, with most cases ending in death. Giovana Vieira, Senior Animal Welfare Scientist with the nonprofit The Humane League, says it’s been a challenge to monitor the spread of infection and more help maybe needed to mitigate the spread. The virus has been found in eight Pennsylvania counties since February 2024 and earlier this month  bird flu was detected at two central Pennsylvania commercial poultry farms, affecting more than two million birds. • Job cuts at Gettysburg National Military Park: Five probationary workers received termination emails last Friday due to the Trumps administrations efforts to slash federal funding. Former maintenance worker Nathaniel Bauter explained that he is frustrated with the termination process as the email he received explained his skills were unsatisfactory, even thought he has documentation from supervisors praising his work. Bauter is reaching out to Sen. John Fetterman and other elected officials for assistance. (Source: WGAL)

• Flights from Lancaster County to Florida coming soon: Breeze Airlines announced today that it offering flights to Florida from Lancaster County. Currently, the airline offers flights from Lancaster to Orlando on Thursdays and Sundays and will transition to offering four weekly flights to Orlando. Flights to Orlando will begin June 6, 2025, available on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. (Source: ABC 27)

• Fire erupts on roof of Lancaster charter school: La Academia Partnership Charter School will be closed for the rest of the week, due to air quality concerns. Wednesday, the fire started on the roof of the school at approximately 9:41 a.m. Lancaster City Fire Department Chief Todd Hutchinson, explained one teacher was transported to the hospital due to smoke inhalation and three others were evaluated at local hospitals for smoke inhalation. The fire was caused by a motor malfunction in a rooftop air handler. The fires caused significant damage to the roof and the second floor of the building suffered extensive water and smoke damage to the interior. (Source: Fox 43)
