• Tuition discount at Elizabethtown College for United Way members: Elizabethtown College is trying to make higher education more affordable by offering United Way members members, employees, volunteers, spouses, and their dependents a 15% discount on tuition. Currently the college has about 75 corporate partnerships and launched a graduate certificate in non-profit leadership designed for current and aspiring non-profit leaders. (Source: ABC 27)
• James Malone sworn in: After winning a special election former East Petersburg Borough Mayor James Andrew Malone (D) was sworn in as Pennsylvania’s newest State Senator. Monday Malone was sworn in by Justice Kevin M. Dougherty, with Lt. Governor Austin Davis in attendance. In the March 25 special election Malone won the 36th State Senate District over Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons (R) by 526 votes. The 36th District includes Manheim Township, Lititz, Elizabethtown, and Mount Joy Township, and parts of Lancaster County. Republicans retain control of the Senate chamber with a 27-23 majority. • Health care workers violence prevention bill to be voted on by Pa. House: The Pa. state house is set to vote on a bill that supporters say would prevent violence against health care workers. Kyson Edwards, a registered nurse at Hershey Medical Center, has experience multiple violent attacks. He is apart of the numbers in the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that display the health care industry experienced the highest counts of workplace violence rates out of any private industry from 2021 to 2022. The Healthcare Workplace Violence Prevention Act requires health facilities to create a workplace violence prevention committee to make plans to prevent violence. A debatable part of the bill is that it would require hospitals to report violations of the act to the state. The bill was made by the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses & Allied Professionals and it has been trying to get the bill passed since 2010. House Bill 926 was reintroduced after the UPMC Memorial Hospital shooting and was passed by the House Labor and Industry Committee in March. (Source: WGAL)
• Lancaster Township new police station [photos]: Lancaster Township’s police department has a new home at 1250 Maple Avenue, next to the township building. The force was created last December with 15 officers hired. The building, which used to be a fire hall, cost over $1 million dollars to upgrade. (Source: LNP)
