• Local high school wins big at Apollo Awards: J.P McCaskey High School’s spring musical production of “The Wedding Singer” won six awards, including outstanding musical of the year at the 17th annual Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards, held in Hershey’s Giant Center. Just like the Tony Awards, the Apollo Awards recognize achievement, both onstage and behind the scenes, by local high school students in musical and play productions. This year four high schools were added to competition, three of them from Lancaster County: Lampeter-Strasburg, McCaskey, Conestoga Valley and Steelton-Highspire. (Source: LNP)

• NAACP virtual town hall featured both Lancaster mayoral candidates Jaime Arroyo, Janet Diaz: Ahead of Tuesday’s primary election Lancaster’s Democratic mayoral candidates Jaime Arroyo and Janet Diaz spent Saturday morning speaking at the NAACP virtual town hall. The town hall hosted by the Lancaster branch of the organization was moderated by its chair Danielle Brown. Brown asked the candidates about their plans to address employment, economic development and how education would benefit people of color. Attendees also had the opportunity to ask questions, which focused primarily on government transparency and community engagement. Arroyo plans to work with workforce development programs like those run by Tec Centro and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology to create more opportunities for School District of Lancaster graduates. Diaz explained she plans to work with health care providers to expand early education and after-school programs to help families living in poverty. • Vision Corps names new presidents and CEO: Megan Tomsheck has been appointed by the Vison Corps board to become the new CEO of the nonprofit organization, that helps people was vision loss.  The hiring process looked first at current employees, with the decision announced to its more than 200 employees on April 7, Tomsheck said. Current President and CEO Dennis Steiner, will proceed in the role until his Oct. 31 retirement, as LNP | LancasterOnline reported in February. (Source: LNP)

• Lancaster based pediatric center unveils new toddler playground: A brand-new infant center was unveiled at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development.  The organization held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new infant and toddler playground Thursday, May 15. This new playground is three times larger than the previous 576-square-foot area and includes safety features and elements that were specifically designed to support developmental growth. The Center said the new playground was made possible by key project donors, including John and Kelly Hollister, who gifted $150,000 towards the project. The playground was constructed by the Benchmark Construction Company. (Source: ABC 27)
