State launches ‘Peace Alliance’ to help groups fighting community violence

The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime & Delinquency announced the launch Monday of an online clearinghouse for resources on reducing community violence.

The PA Peace Alliance website offers libraries of materials on preventing and reducing gun violence as well as opportunities for training and connecting with subject-matter experts and peers in other communities. It also includes information on nonprofit marketing, fundraising and outreach.

“We’re excited to support groups working on the front lines of violence prevention and intervention,” the commission’s Executive Director Michael Pennington said in a statement.

The alliance itself is described as a “community of practice” bringing together violence intervention professionals from across the state. Its flagship members are the recipients of commission violence intervention & prevention (VIP) grants. The list includes three nonprofits with a presence in Lancaster County: Advoz, Bench Mark Program and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region.

The commission envisions using the alliance to offer regional meetings, promote collaboration and provide direct training and technical assistance.

The clearinghouse was created by the commission in partnership with the WestEd Justice and Prevention Research Center and Local Initiatives Support Corp.
