With Lancaster County under a drought watch as of last week, the city of Lancaster’s Bureau of Water is asking its customers to conserve water.

Municipalities served by the City of Lancaster Bureau of Water

  • City of Lancaster
  • East Hempfield Township
  • East Lampeter Township
  • Lancaster Township
  • Manheim Township
  • Manor Township
  • Millersville Borough
  • Pequea Township
  • West Hempfield Township
  • West Lampeter Township

The bureau issued a voluntary conservation notice Monday, asking households to limit water use to essential needs “where possible.”

Examples of nonessential water use include watering lawns and gardens, washing cars and hosing off sidewalks or driveways, the city said.

Besides the city, the bureau supplies water in nine surrounding municipalities. It serving more than 120,000 people, or more than one-fifth of Lancaster County’s population.

Lancaster County is one of 33 Pennsylvania counties recently placed under a drought watch. Two more, Berks and Schuylkill counties, are under a drought warning.

The city’s announcement said the area is under a “moderate drought” and no significant precipitation is forecast. That has led to the Conestoga River, one of the city’s sources of drinking water, dropping well below normal levels.
