Lancaster County Prison Officer Irene Riley was honored at Thursday's Prison Board meeting with a certificate of appreciation for her efforts to boost inmate morale.
Riley recently led inmates in a project to paint inspirational words and symbols on what had been a drab concrete block wall in D Block, which is one of the prison's older sections.
"They just said, 'Can we?' and I said, 'Let's go,'" Riley told the board members.
The project serves as a reminder, she said, "that we all have to have some sort of hope."
