Video: 9th Annual Back-to-School Giveaway has a different look this year

Rep. Mike Sturla’s 9th Annual Back-to School giveaway looks different this year, but it has been an overall success.

Each year, the giveaway provides School District of Lancaster students entering kindergarten through eighth grade with free backpacks containing school supplies.

Normally, the giveaway is held inside Clipper Magazine Stadium and features food, music and other attractions. This year, to accommodate social distancing precautions, families set up an appointment to pick up the backpacks in a drive-by setting.

“Even though back-to-school might look really different for a lot of kids this year, we can still get them a backpack, get them some school supplies, and some of the ways we can get them to succeed at school this year”, said Audrey Lilley from United Way of Lancaster County.

This year's giveaway followed past practice of providing uniforms, shoes and school supplies. Students also received two to three reusable face masks, provided through local donations, including a $10,000 Lancaster Cares grant.
