“It feels good to see your stamp on Lancaster,” Shaina Cruz said Saturday.
Cruz was among the dozens of people who came out over the weekend to paint a “welcoming mural” at Ganse Apothecary. The sessions were very well attended, Project Manager Shauna Yorty said.
Organizers traced the design on the building’s facade and numbered sections to indicate colors. The mural depicts a diverse group collaborating on a quilt; the quilt squares were left blank by artist Claudia Rojas so they could be designed and painted in by community members.
Cruz used a thin brush with a fine point to carefully detail her quilt square, which features fish swimming amid raindrops.
As of Monday morning, the right-hand portion of the mural had been finished, as well as most of the quilt squares. The design team is working on the remainder and is hoping to finish by the end of the week, Yorty said.
The mural, a celebration of Lancaster’s tradition of welcoming newcomers, is a collaboration involving Ganse Apothecary, Lancaster city government and the refugee resettlement agency Church World Service, with support from the Lancaster County Community Foundation, Landis Homes and Penn Square Rotary Club. Materials were provided by Two Dudes Painting.
