We the People First Friday at the Ware Center Celebrates Black History and Culture with living Memoir, Gallery Exhibit

Friday, Feb. 7 during We the People First Friday, an initiative by The Arts at Millersville to feature community centered performances and exhibits, the Ware Center will be hosting a performance Becoming OTHELLO: A Black Girl’s Journey, and opening a new art exhibit “Ain’t I A Woman?”

Funded through the Mid Atlantic Tours program of Mid Atlantic Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Becoming OTHELLO: A Black Girl’s Journey is a one-woman living memoir show. Chronicling the life of Debra Ann Byrd displaying her joy-filled, tumultuous youth in Harlem, her fateful encounter with a troop of Shakespearean actors, and her gender flipped journey to playing Shakespeare’s Othello. Byrd’s performance is vulnerable, personal, and displays a deep story of perseverance and unconditional love.

The performance starts at 7:30pm. Tickets are free but are required for entry. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 717-871-7600, or in person at the Ware Center in Lancaster or the Student Memorial Center box office on the Millersville University Campus.

From 6 to 8 p.m. the opening of “Ain’t I A Woman?” will be held in the Regitz Gallery. The exhibit created by Wanawake, a group of local women artists led by spoken word poet Thunda Khatt, is a tribute to the resilience, strength, and creativity of women, drawing inspiration from their shared history and individual journeys. Creating a rich tapestry of visual storytelling through diverse mediums and techniques used, reflects the different viewpoints and observations of the artists involved. The exhibit will be on display until March 28.
