By the numbers: Winter ‘mini-surge’ of Covid is over locally

The uptick in county COVID cases and deaths in December and January ended in February.

The daily average of hospital cases – 34 – was about 30% below its January level of 50.

The 12 COVID deaths reported by the County Coroner’s office during the month were two fewer than January’s 14, a third lower than the 18 deaths of December and far below the 63 of February 2022.

The county’s personal care homes saw a similar decline. There were no deaths at those facilities, and total cases among them, both for staff and residents, were in the mid-teens.

Seven nursing homes reported COVID deaths. There were two at Landis Homes and one each at Garden Spot Village, The Glen at Willow Valley, Fairmount Homes, Quarryville Presbyterian Home, and United Zion Retirement Community.

The chart below clearly shows the trends. The numbers are largely self-explanatory.

This snapshot of COVID-19 in Lancaster County was compiled by Erica Runkles, Dr. Mary Glazier and Penn Glazier, and me, using records from the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office, the state Health Department, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
