The Black Artist Waystation aims to “amplify the visibility and support” of Black artists in Lancaster to promote community healing and empowerment. Its name references Lancaster’s role as a waystation on the Underground Railroad.
The theme of the 2024 program is “revolutionary aesthetics.” This year’s four Black Artist Waystation fellows are as follows:
- Evita Colon: Poet, lyricist, playwright and entrepreneur, Colon was Lancaster city’s first Poet Laureate and the founder of Speak to My Soul.
- R.J. Scott: A photographer and digital illustrator, Scott formerly lived in Lancaster County and now resides in Maryland.
- Blake Showers: An illustrator and creative director, formerly of Birmingham, Alabama, now living in York.
- Brandon Webb: A Lancaster-based photographer and multidisciplinary artist.
