Lancaster's immigrant and refugee community brought music, dance and reflections on identity to the Ware Center stage this past First Friday at Church World Service's "Acts of Welcome" concert.

"This annual event celebrates many different cultures," Emcee Rwamucyo Karekezi said.

Friday's show included past favorites, like the Nepali Dancers; plus first-time performers Hong Dong and Jenny Chen of the Lancaster Chinese Dance Group and Bruno Cervera, a part-Argentine writer born and raised in Mexico.

Cervera, who moved to the United States in 2015, recited a piece in English and Spanish about "we who are caught between labels and identities" and ignored or stereotyped by mainstream culture.

Despite everything, he said, "we … carry on and flourish, as masters of our own destiny."
