Millersville University will hold a free screening Wednesday evening of a documentary on migrant workers’ role in reforestation in the United States.
“A Thousand Pines” is November’s entry in Millersville’s “On Screen | In Person” series. Like other On Screen | In Person showings, it will be preceded by a panel discussion and followed by a Q&A with the film’s co-director, Noam Osband.
A Thousand Pines follows a dozen tree planters from Oaxaca, Mexico, over the course of a season as they plant trees throughout the United States, showing the hard work, the struggles they face and the way they bond to overcome adversity.
The United States is the world’s top producer of wood and paper products and it relies almost entirely on foreign workers for replanting.
“It’s important to show the hardships and sacrifices tree planter guest workers endure to provide for their families, especially in the political climate regarding immigration and the workforce today,” Osband and co-director Sebastián Díaz said in a statement.
The panel discussion will kick off at 6:15 p.m., with the film following at 7 p.m., wrapping up with Osband’s Q&A.
The panelists are as follows:
- Cristina Perez, Assistant Professor of American Studies, Franklin & Marshall College
- Keith Williams, Vice President of Engagement & Education, Lancaster Conservancy
- Maria DelCarpio, Recruiter, Pennsylvania Migrant Education Program
- Carolyn Weaver, Assistant Professor of Biology, Millersville University
