The seventh edition of a local charity event, the Fun Pink Pageant, is set to take place this weekend.
Put on by South Ann Concerned Neighbors, the “pageant with a purpose” is a pink-themed fashion show for women over 40. It will be held at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East.
The show starts at 4 p.m.; doors open at 3:15 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available in advance here.
“We’re expecting a nice turnout this year,” said Alice Sanders, who is organizing the event along with the South Ann community group’s executive director, Darlene Byrd.
There are 11 contestants and Saunders said her team is hoping for 200 attendees or more.
Proceeds will benefit the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and South Ann Concerned Neighbors’ planned community hub project.
The festivities will be overseen by mistress of ceremonies Valerie Pritchett, the ABC 27 news anchor; and three judges: Milzy Carrasco, Lancaster’s director of neighborhood engagement; and Dr. Daleela Dodge and health equity program director Heather Doyle, both of Penn State Health.
Audience members will weigh in to help select a winner, who will receive $500 for donation to a charity of her choice. There is also a quilt raffle.
The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 300,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and the disease will claim more than 40,000 lives.
Black women have a 40% higher death rate from breast cancer. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation cites a mix of factors, including lack of health insurance, worse overall health and a greater prevalence of more aggressive tumors.
