• New head at Lancaster Country Day: Effective July 1 Emilie Davis Kosoff will be the new head of school at Lancaster Country Day. Kossoff succeeds Matt Micciche, who “parted ways” with the Manheim Township private school in November amid fallout from an incident in which 48 of its students and 12 others were depicted in nude images generated using artificial intelligence. Lewis Thayne will continue as the school interim head of school until Kosoff starts. According to an announcement made on the schools website by the board of trustees, Kosoff was recommend by the search firm RG175, from a pool of 40 applicants. (Source: LNP)
• Police Chief of Manheim Township placed on leave: Following the investigation of a “police incident” Manheim Township Police Chief Duane Fisher has been placed on paid administrative leave. The district says it is conducting an internal investigation of the incident that involved Fisher on April 30, near Foxshire Plaza on Fruitville Pike. May 2 the police reported that Fisher was assaulted following the pulling over of a motorcycle on April 30. Police say the motorcycle did not have a registration plate and ran a red light on Lititz Pike and Pike Road, while also weaving between vehicles and riding onto a sidewalk. Fisher, in an unmarked vehicle, tried to stop the motorcycle on the 1900 block of Fruitville Pike and identified himself as police. Allegedly the motorcyclist pushed Fisher and attempted to escape on foot. Later, they were apprehended and charged with aggravated assault. (Source: ABC 27)
• Strasburg Township resident fined over demolition of alleged historic landmark: May 5, at the Strasburg Twp. Board of Supervisors meeting, Jonathan Stoltzfus spoke on behalf of Isaac Lapp, arguing that an alleged historic structure Lapp demolished couldn’t have been due to several nearby resources being mislabeled. Lapp demolished the structure in July after the township denied a demolition permit in 2022. Lapp moved into a consent agreement for payment with the township last month, following the townships $20,000 penalty. Stoltzfus showed the board a a copy of the township’s historic resources map and claimed he could show that locations of several nearby historic resources on North Star Road were mislabeled. The first two payments on the fine have been paid by Lapp. Board members voted to put off the second payment until they can evaluate the new evidence. (Source: LNP)
• Dead birds discovered in in misdirected shipment from Lancaster County hatchery: 4,000 birds were found dead in a misdirected Lancaster County hatchery shipment of 10,000 birds destined for locations across the country, the shipment was found in Delaware. May 2, the Delaware Department of Agriculture received a call from a USPS processing and distribution center in Delaware about several undeliverable boxes of baby birds. Department workers found about 10,000 birds but an estimated 4,000 had passed away due to “an inadequate environment for an extended period,” the department said. (Source: CBS 21)
