Amtrak has made improvements and repairs at the Lancaster Station (LNC). The repairs include safety and efficiency changes made in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
The changes to the station include replacing platforms and foundations, insulating the pedestrian overpass, resurfacing floors, replacing HVAC equipment and repairing platform canopies. Some repairs were made with the intention to revitalize and maintain the history of the station, such as replacing the windows with historically accurate fenestrations and repairing the baggage lift closure.
“Amtrak is currently progressing several vital construction projects at Lancaster Station, including work to ensure the facility is in a state of good repair,” said Amtrak Vice President of Accessibility, Stations and Facilities, Dr. David Handera. “We are working closely with our partners at PennDOT to modernize this iconic Lancaster landmark and enhance the overall customer travel experience.”
Reconstruction began with the south platform, which returned to service in November 2024, and has since moved to the north platform, which was demolished to make way for a new platform foundation. Travelers can anticipate seeing the north platform reopened in January 2026. Additional repairs to the pedestrian overpass and station building are to be completed by March 2026.
“”I am delighted to see the improvements taking shape at the Lancaster Amtrak Station. The station is a vital part of our community,” said Danene Sorace, Lancaster mayor.
In its coordination with PennDOT, Amtrak is working on an extension for the pedestrian bridge. This project will provide a connection for travelers to access a new parking lot on the north side of the station with is said to be completed in fall 2026.
Additionally, the Amtrak Police Department facility at the Lancaster Station will also be renovated, providing a safe and secure experience for guests and employees. These renovations will include evidence storage, an upgraded processing area, canine room and a refurbished historic storefront, all of which are planned to be completed this summer.
“This investment by Amtrak is great news for Southeast Pennsylvania. When our transportation infrastructure is accessible and updated, everyone benefits,” said Senator Fetterman, D-Pa., “As the second busiest Amtrak station in Pennsylvania, I’m grateful Amtrak is prioritizing the revitalization and improvement of the historic Lancaster station.”
