Effective April 7, Dr. Joseph MacDonald has been named vice president and chief medical officer for Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center. His duties will include the oversight of clinical activities and resources for efficient delivery of health services.
MacDonald earned his degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Additionally, MacDonald also holds an MBA from the Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
From 2001 to 2004, he served as an Army major, physician and battalion surgeon on active duty with the 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, during combat deployment to Iraq. MacDonald received awards for honorable or exemplary service including the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Combat Medical Badge.
MacDonald also worked as a primary care provider and hospitalist with the Physicians’ Alliance LTD in Lancaster from 2004 to 2017 before joining UPMC for the next six years. At UPMC he served as chair of the Department of Medicine at UPMC Harrisburg, West Shore, UPMC Community Osteopathic, vice president of medical staff at UPMC Lititz and served as medical co-director, hospitalist service, for UPMC in Central Pa. for six years.
At Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center, MacDonald will work as a liaison to employed and independent members of the Penn State Health Medical Group operational leadership, medical staff and hospital and health system administration.
