Ware Center hosts local panelists, free documentary examining substance abuse

Millersville University will present a documentary on substance abuse as the next entry in its “On Screen | In Person” series.

The feature, “Our American Family,” will be preceded by a local panel discussion and followed by a Q&A with the director, Hallee Adelman, and Linda Geraghty, the mother of the five-member family depicted in the film.

The event takes place the evening of Wednesday, March 13, at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

The panel discussion will begin at 6:15 p.m. with the following experts:

  • David Ashworth, president judge, Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas; founder of the county Drug Court
  • Chris Dreisbach, CEO, Blueprints for Addiction Recovery
  • Ryan Orr, professor of sociology, Millersville University
  • Kayla Weiler, manager of addiction medicine, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health

The film will be shown at 7 p.m., followed by the panel discussion.

“Our American Family” is billed as a “radically honest” portrait of generational substance abuse and a “touching, eye-opening look into one of America’s most pressing crises.”

In a Sept. 1, 2022, review, the New York Times wrote: “Addiction is a complex, challenging topic, and ‘Our American Family,’ in its sharp specificity, handles it with grace.”
