The Lancaster Rec is encouraging the community to come out this Saturday, Sept. 14, for the finale of the 2024 Unity Cup, its World Cup-style soccer tournament made up of teams featuring “local talent from around the world.”

The teams in the Unity Cup are made up largely of players from Lancaster’s many immigrant and refugee communities. Fourteen teams began competing on July 27. Since then, 10 have been eliminated, leaving the final four: Columbia, Ecuador, Myanmar and Peru.

They will face off beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lancaster Township Community Park, 1221 Millersville Pike. Columbia will play Ecuador and Myanmar will play Peru, with the winners facing each other in the final match at 11:30 a.m.

A food truck and other vendors will be there, and WGAL will emcee the closing ceremonies.

“This is more than just a game,” the Rec said in a Facebook post, “it’s our way of celebrating Lancaster’s Welcoming Week and bringing the community together through the love of soccer. … Let’s make this a day to remember.”

The Unity Cup final coincides with the start of Lancaster city’s Welcoming Week, which runs from Saturday, Sept. 14, through Sunday, Sept. 22. The week celebrates Lancaster’s diversity and the city’s status as a certified Welcoming City.
